About the Program

Does multiculturalism still have a future in Canada and the world today? Managing Director of the Asian-Canadian Special Events Association, Charlie Wu, and the Kaiser Professor at Western Washington University, Shih-Fen Chen, will engage in a dialogue exploring the struggle and reconciliation between national identity brought from the motherland, cultural identity, and multiculturalism, as well as the contradictions and conflicts between generations in a diverse immigrant society.

Dr. Shih-Fen Chen
Scholar

Dr. Shih-Fen Chen is currently the Kaiser Professor of International Business and Director of the Center for International Business at Western Washington University. Following his promotion to full professor at Ivey Business School in 2013, Shih-Fen began writing political commentaries. His work has gained recognition, and he has appeared on various television shows as well as contributed to several print media outlets in Taiwan. He has a strong online presence, with nearly 70,000 followers on his Facebook page.

Charlie Wu
Advocate

Charlie Wu is currently a board member of the Canadian Association of Performing Arts. He joined the Taiwanese Canadian Cultural Society in 1999 and took over as Managing Director of the Taiwanese Cultural Festival in 2001. Under his leadership at the Asian Canadian Special Events Association, he expanded the reach of TAIWANfest and developed another flagship event, LunarFest in 2010. He has been instrumental in redefining TAIWANfest from a community cultural festival to a platform engaging the broader community through arts and culture. 

The organization has developed partnerships with institutions such as the Museum of Vancouver, Vancouver International Film Festival, Granville Island, North by North East, and Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. Building for the common good through arts and culture is central to his vision, both in Canada and Taiwan.

2024 Hope Talks explore how people absorb, transform, and recreate culture between the migration process. Speak of the past in order to move forward!
