About the Program

Katrina Chen, former Minister of State for Child Care of British Columbia, published her first children’s picture book, A Stronger Home, last May. The book was inspired by her personal experiences with domestic violence. The publication aims to encourage survivors of gender-based violence to speak out and to raise public understanding and awareness of domestic violence.

TAIWANfest features an exhibition centered on A Stronger Home, with Katrina Chen presenting live readings, delivering a short talk, and facilitating a workshop—all designed to create a safe space where children and adults alike can explore what an ideal “home” might look like.

Katrina Chen

Katrina Chen 陳葦蓁 immigrated to Canada from Taiwan on her own and began her career in grassroots community work before serving as a Trustee on the Burnaby Board of Education. She was later elected MLA for Burnaby–Lougheed and became the first Taiwanese‑born Canadian appointed to the BC Cabinet as Minister of State for Child Care, where she helped lay the foundation for the $10‑a‑Day child care system.

With nearly 20 years of experience in community service, Katrina is now a life and impact coach and the President of 安信 Community Savings, B.C.’s first credit union initiative dedicated to serving Chinese‑language communities. As a survivor of gender‑based violence, she is also the author of A Stronger Home, an award‑winning picture book about family violence, healing, and the meaning of home. She continues to advocate for child care, public education, and equity.
