About the Program

Rooted in Chinese silk-and-bamboo music traditions, this art form has evolved into many unique expressions across the world—from Taiwan to Canada, from classical to contemporary. "Change" remains the enduring charm of culture itself.

This diversity is also reflected in its many names: Minyue in China, Zhongyue in Hong Kong and Macau, Huayue in Singapore and Malaysia, and Guoyue in Taiwan—each term carrying its own cultural resonance and history.

Based in Canada, the BC Chinese Chamber Ensemble invites you on a journey that spans time and tradition. Grounded in classical instruments and enriched by modern musical language, the ensemble honours its heritage while embracing a spirit of renewal.
The concert opens with lively festive pieces that set a joyful celebratory tone, followed by lyrical works filled with folk melodies that evoke warmth and nostalgia. Up-tempo, energetic pieces then showcase the expressive range and virtuosity of traditional instruments in contemporary compositions. Interspersed are delicate adagios and vivid musical depictions of daily life, all woven together by the elegant, flowing spirit of Jiangnan sizhu (silk and bamboo music).

Whether you are a longtime lover of Chinese music or discovering it for the first time, this performance offers heartfelt melodies, rhythmic vitality, and the timeless beauty of cross-cultural fusion—an unforgettable afternoon where old meets new.

BC Chinese Chamber Ensemble (BCCCE)

The BC Chinese Chamber Ensemble (BCCCE) is a newly formed group under the BC Chinese Music Association (BCCMA). We are a collective of amateur and professional musicians who share a passion for traditional Chinese instruments.

Our repertoire draws from a rich tapestry of music—rooted in traditional Chinese classics, while also embracing contemporary Chinese-style pieces that resonate with today's audiences.

We are dedicated to preserving and sharing the beauty of Chinese musical culture within our diverse Canadian society. At the same time, we remain open to creative exploration, incorporating Western instruments and world percussion into our arrangements when fitting, to add new colors and textures to our sound.

With our small ensemble size, we are nimble and versatile, able to perform in a wide range of settings. Community engagement is at the heart of what we do—we regularly offer volunteer performances at care homes, cancer centers, cultural festivals, and music events, bringing the joy of music to those we serve.
