A single grain of rice captures the wisdom of sustainability in Taitung’s Hakka villages.
Did you know? About a quarter of Taitung’s population has Hakka heritage, and Guanshan is one of Taitung’s major rice-growing regions. The Fan family has deep roots in Guanshan for generations and has witnessed the development of agriculture in Taitung.
As the family’s current generation took over the rice mill, they carried on the Hakka spirit of valuing resources and cherishing the land. They’ve integrated sustainability into food and agriculture education, helping more people rediscover the journey of rice from farm to table and the relationship between people and the land.

Established in 1986 and based in Guanshan Township, Taitung County, ZiYuan Rice Husking Factory was founded by the Hakka Fan family, whose members have been farmers for generations. Upholding the founding principle of “ensuring that the rice farmers have worked so hard to grow is not purchased at low prices,” the mill began by sourcing rice locally. Through professional milling techniques and rigorous quality control, it has established brands such as “Emperor Rice” and “Houshan Rice,” promoting Guanshan’s high-quality rice throughout Taiwan.
As agriculture has evolved, ZiYuan has actively embraced organic farming and contract farming systems. Working hand in hand with local farmers, the company has established a large-scale organic rice-growing region, putting into practice the principles of environmentally friendly, sustainable agriculture and safe, trustworthy ingredients. At the same time, the company has obtained multiple certifications—including ISO 22000, HACCP, organic, and halal—ensuring that every grain of rice embodies quality, safety, and trust.
In recent years, the company has also established the “Houshan Rice Inspection Station” and the Houshan Café, integrating food and agriculture education, agritourism, rice culture, and local revitalization to help more people discover the beauty of the land, the farmers, and Taitung through a simple bowl of rice. ZiYuan believes that true brand value lies not only in producing high-quality rice but also in safeguarding the land, supporting farmers, and passing down Taiwan’s rice culture and spirit of sustainability from generation to generation.
