Founded in 2006, the band TUDI-VOICE was inspired by lead singer A-Tat’s admiration for “The White Rice Bomber” Yang Ju-men, who became a symbol of grassroots resistance against unfair trade policies threatening Taiwan’s agricultural heritage.
TUDI-Voice uses music to engage in social movements. Literally translated to “Rural Armed Youth”, they are “armed” against injustice, not with violence, but with music.
As they’ve grown older and entered different stages of life, their creative direction has evolved, but what remains constant is their commitment to speaking for the land and giving voice to those who cannot be heard.
This exhibition features selected moments from the social movements that TUDI-VOICE have participated in over the years, inviting our Canadian friends to step into Taiwanese society and its unwavering resilience.
To expand the Hsinchu Science Park (Phase IV), the government planned to expropriate approximately 157 hectares of land in Dapu Village, Zhunan Township, Miaoli County. Although 98% of landowners agreed, a few farmers resisted the plan.
In June 2010, the Miaoli County Government began land leveling even as rice crops neared harvest, forcibly clearing fields from those who had not agreed to the expropriation. This action sparked widespread outrage, media attention, and nationwide protests demanding legal reforms and protection of land rights.
The government eventually reached a compromise with the local self-help group, designating special zones for redistributed farmland. In 2013, a zoning change led to the demolition of four homes, prompting a lawsuit. In 2014, the High Administrative Court ruled partially in favour of the displaced families, and the Ministry of the Interior chose not to appeal. In 2018, one family was granted permission to rebuild on the original site—a symbolic victory.
The Dapu Incident highlighted controversial land expropriation practices and underscored the importance of housing rights and land justice in Taiwan. It remains a landmark case in the country’s civil rights and environmental justice movements.
In 2013, the Miaoli County Government forcibly demolished homes in Dapu Village to make way for a science park expansion project. On July 18, without warning and ignoring prior government promises to preserve the homes, the county ordered the demolition of four residences, triggering public outrage.
On August 18, one month after the demolitions, over 20,000 people joined the “818 Occupy the Government” rally in Taipei, organized by the Taiwan Rural Front. That night, protesters occupied the plaza in front of the Ministry of the Interior, demanding government accountability. The occupation lasted around 20 hours and ended peacefully after several tense standoffs with police.
Following legal action, a court partially ruled in favour of the displaced families, allowing the iconic “Chang Pharmacy” to be rebuilt on its original site. The event raised national awareness about unjust land seizures and pushed for reform in land acquisition laws.
The 818 movement became a landmark in Taiwan’s land justice and civil disobedience movements. It symbolized the power of peaceful protest and grassroots solidarity in confronting state violence and protecting community rights.
Since the 2010 Dapu land seizure in Miaoli, Taiwanese farmers have grown increasingly frustrated with unfair land expropriations and water resource monopolies. Farmland is taken by force, and essential water supplies diverted for corporate use.
On July 17, 2023, farmers symbolically planted rice on Ketagalan Boulevard to protest land-grabbing laws. On July 16, 2024, they returned—farmers from across Taiwan built straw huts and art installations, sharing their stories. Forums and speeches demanded amendments to the Land Expropriation Act and protection of food and water rights.
Despite civil society proposing legal amendments, the government has been slow to act. Farmers call for transparency, fair distribution of water, and real legislative reform.
This movement asserts that land and water are public goods, not for political or corporate exploitation. Farmers are standing up to protect food sovereignty, intergenerational justice, and a sustainable future shared by both urban and rural communities.
The Dapu Incident brought nationwide attention to the injustice of land expropriation in Taiwan. On July 18, 2021, four homes in Dapu—including the iconic Chang Pharmacy—were forcibly demolished. The rallying cry “Demolish Dapu Today, Tear Down the Government Tomorrow” spread across the island, prompting several local governments to pause land seizures.
Over the past year, Dapu residents never gave up. Like newly harvested rice, they stood up again. This memorial event combines music and art to transform sorrow into strength, keeping the memory of Dapu—and the demand for justice—alive.
This is not just remembrance. Until the government apologizes and returns the land, the people will not forget. And we will continue to stand with the four families of Dapu.

The Dazipu Canal is a century-old irrigation system in Changhua, built during the Japanese colonial era. It irrigates over 18,000 hectares of farmland and supports Taiwan’s vital rice, vegetable, and livestock production. The canal is crucial to the region’s food security and agricultural sustainability.
To supply water to the Central Taiwan Science Park Phase IV, the government planned to dig along the Dazipu Canal and install a large pipeline capable of diverting 130,000 tons of water daily. This project moved forward even though major tech companies had withdrawn, and no updated environmental or water impact assessments were conducted.
Farmers and environmental groups strongly opposed the plan, warning that it would worsen water shortages and land subsidence in an already vulnerable region. Public outcry grew over the government spending billions on an unnecessary “mosquito pipe” project with unclear benefits and high social and environmental costs.
This controversy highlights the tension between industrial development and environmental justice. It underscores the importance of protecting agricultural water resources, respecting farmers’ livelihoods, and ensuring sustainable land use through transparent and responsible planning.
After the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, public concern over nuclear safety in Taiwan surged—especially regarding the controversial construction, environmental impact and nuclear waste disposal of the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant (Nuclear Four) in Gongliao, New Taipei.
On March 9, 2013, over 150 civil organizations, including the Green Citizens’ Action Alliance, organized the “309 Anti-Nuclear Rally.” It was held simultaneously in Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung, and Taitung, drawing over 200,000 participants—marking the largest non-partisan anti-nuclear demonstration in Taiwan’s history.

After the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, public concern over nuclear safety in Taiwan surged. One major focus was the “Fourth Nuclear Power Plant” (Nuclear Four), under construction in Gongliao, New Taipei. Widespread public opposition emerged. In 2013, director Ko I-Chen and other artists and cultural workers launched the “No Nukes, Fridays at Six” movement. Every Friday at 6 p.m., people gathered at Liberty Square in Taipei, calling for the termination of the Nuclear Four project, advocating for a nuclear-free homeland.

Leading up to the 2021 referendum on restarting Nuclear Four, a renewed version of the “No Nukes, Fridays at Six” campaign was launched. Monthly gatherings were held on the last Friday evening of each month until the vote. The format remained simple: speeches, music, and open assemblies — reminding people of the original spirit of the anti-nuclear movement.
This movement embodied the gentle persistence and active engagement of Taiwan’s civil society. Through the power of art and grassroots organizing, it reflected a democratic society’s deep concern for energy policy. It also served as a powerful reminder that the spirit of a movement can reignite collective memory and continue to shape future choices.
Taiwanese farmers have long faced pressure from free trade, land expropriation, and climate change. Plans to import 830 Chinese agricultural products and U.S. pork containing ractopamine have raised serious concerns about food security and the future of local agriculture.
On February 3, 2014, the Taiwan Rural Front held the “People’s Forum on Food Sovereignty” on Ketagalan Boulevard. Representatives from La Via Campesina, an international farmers’ movement, joined over 500 local farmers and civic groups to share struggles and strategies. Qingshui, located on the coastal plains of Taichung, is known for its fertile farmland and rich agricultural heritage. In recent years, development plans like the Wufu Zun Industrial Park have threatened these lands. The proposed site, covering 5.4 hectares, is near downtown Qingshui and upstream from the Gaomei Wetlands—raising concerns over pollution and the displacement of local farmers.
In response, farmers and citizens formed the “Qingshui Anti-Industrial Development Self-Help Association.” Through press events, public forums, and symbolic actions like handprint petitions, they voiced strong opposition. A scheduled government hearing was abruptly canceled, further fueling public frustration and distrust.
Activists and local groups continued to monitor the environmental impact assessment process. They urged the government to prioritize redeveloping unused industrial zones instead of sacrificing valuable farmland. Some officials acknowledged the concerns and proposed exploring agricultural innovation instead of industrial expansion.
This movement highlights farmers’ deep ties to the land and calls for responsible land use. The slogan “Protect Farmland, Save the Wetlands” became a rallying cry, turning a local protest into a broader debate about sustainable development and Taiwan’s environmental future.
Central and southern Taiwan have long suffered from severe air pollution, especially in autumn and winter due to coal-fired power plants, industrial emissions, and energy policies that prioritize the north at the expense of the south. Residents face daily health risks.

In 2024, after the KMT and TPP gained a majority in Taiwan’s legislature, they introduced a series of controversial bills. The lack of transparency and rushed procedures sparked public outcry, including the large-scale “Bluebird Movement.” In response, civil society launched a mass recall campaign targeting lawmakers and local officials from both the KMT and DPP.
Known as the “Mass Recall Movement,” this campaign began in 2025 and targeted 59 public officials, including legislators, a mayor, and city councillors. The first wave of recall votes took place on July 13 and 26, while the next rounds are scheduled for August 23, to coincide with a national referendum. This recall campaign connected global supporters, with volunteers in Canada and beyond helping overseas Taiwanese voters submit their petition forms to Taiwan.

The Losheng Sanatorium, built in 1930, was Taiwan’s only leprosy hospital. Originally run as a forced isolation facility under Japanese rule, it later became a self-sustaining community for former patients who had nowhere else to go.
In 1994, the site was chosen for the MRT Xinzhuang Depot. Authorities promised a “build-first, relocate-later” plan, but by 2002, construction began and nearly 70% of the original buildings were demolished. The new relocation buildings were poorly designed and ignored the needs of residents. In response, students and activists formed the Youth Alliance for Losheng in 2005 to fight for preservation.
Several preservation plans proposed by the MRT Bureau were criticized as insufficient. The final “530 Plan,” announced in 2007, claimed to preserve 40 buildings, but was later revealed to save only 28—nearly identical to an earlier 41.6% proposal.
Between 2008 and 2012, forced evictions and construction led to serious damage in the sanatorium buildings. Despite the controversy, the Xinzhuang MRT line opened in 2012. In 2016, the government began promoting “Rebuilding Losheng,” but a new conflict arose over the entrance design. Activists pushed for a gently sloped platform for accessibility, while the MRT Bureau insisted on building a suspended sky bridge.
The Losheng conflict highlights how infrastructure projects can disregard the rights and histories of marginalized communities. It has become a symbol of the tension between urban development and human dignity. The long-standing resistance by the residents, students, and activists continues to call for justice, memory, and meaningful inclusion in the decision-making process.

The movement had lasting political impacts: the ruling KMT suffered major electoral defeats, youth participation in politics increased, and new political parties emerged.
Legal proceedings against protesters continued for years. In 2021, Taiwan’s High Court recognized civil disobedience and overturned several convictions, reducing charges to fines for a few individuals.
