Pancouver Stage

3:15pm - 4:45pm

About the Program

The Ryukyu Kingdom was formally annexed and dissolved by Japan in 1879 to form Okinawa Prefecture. However, its unique Ryukyuan culture and heritage continue to thrive as of this day. In reflection of the BECOMING ME theme, we have Ryukyuan ballads through our Eisa drumming, Sanshin (Okinawan three string banjo) and Ryukyu Buyo (Traditional Ryukyu dance).

Vancouver Okinawa Taiko
Musicians

Vancouver Okinawa Taiko, formerly known as Yuaikai Ryukyu Taiko, is an Okinawan taiko dance group that was formed in Metro Vancouver in 2004. The group wishes to be “ambassadors” of Okinawan folk performing art in which Okinawan style drumming and dancing combine together along with traditional as well as contemporary Okinawan music.

From the Curating Team

TAIWANfest welcomes local artists to the stage in a presentation of live music and dance that reflects the transformation of cultural diversity.

TAIWANfest Vancouver is grateful to be held on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish Nation), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). We acknowledge our privilege to be gathered here, and commit to work with and be respectful to the Indigenous peoples of this land while we engage in meaningful conversations of culture and reconciliation.
