About the Program

Writing Taiwanese songs is a dead end?

Taiwanese indie band Lilium’s “alternative” music that masterfully combines traditional elements of beiguan, nanguan, chants, yueqin and more, has quickly became a classic for Taiwanese music fans. Their meticulous and experimental music style has transcended Asia, bringing a refreshing sound experience for audiences of different cultures. An intricate blend of melodies, tones, and lyrics—you don’t need to understand Taiwanese to feel the beauty of the language.

Lilium is taking Taiwanese songs on an unprecedented path.

Lilium
Artist

Follow the Lilium, freely traverse through time and space. The curious melody, arrangements, and lyrics, the misplaced traditional and modern symbols... forget the clichés, and discover the endless possibilities of music.

From Taipei, Lilium's 2019 debut album Burnana won them Best Rock Album and Best Newcomer at the Golden Indie Music Awards, and was nominated for Best Taiwanese Album at the Golden Melody Awards. Their second album Road to..., released in 2021, won Best Taiwanese Album and Best Album Design at the Golden Melody Awards.

Lilium has been experimenting with Taiwanese traditional music for many years. They combine nanguan, beiguan, and the moon lute with bossa nova, metal, synthwave, disco-funk and more. Paired with their witty, humorous lyrics, this is a neo-Taiwanese Future-Retro ballad for the new generation!

¡Sinophone!

“Sinophone” refers to anyone who is Chinese-speaking, across the broad spectrum of the Sinitic languages. This series of programs is co-presented by Jade Music Fest and TAIWANfest. ¡Sinophone! aims to promote the diversity of Chinese-language music and showcase artists from different countries, music genres, dialects, as well as encourage the long-term cultural and music exchange between the East and the West.

From the Curating Team

Through the universal languages of dance and music, TAIWANfest explores intercultural connections in flamenco dance, Chinese-language music, and more.
