About the Program

This program features a string quartet by the accomplished Portuguese pianist, composer and scholar Jose Vianna da Motta. Active in Germany at the turn of the 19th century, he was a student of Franz Liszt and earned a reputation as an esteemed interpreter of Beethoven and Bach. Though his career and compositions revolved around the piano, Viana da Motta composed works for many ensembles, including a handful of selections for string quartet. This String Quartet in Eb Major was composed when he was 20 years old, touring Europe with solo concerts and performances alongside prominent musicians of the day.

Vianna da Motta’s work is accompanied in today’s program by arrangements of popular Taiwanese selections from Mayday and Teresa Teng, as well as a Danish arrangement of an ancient Shetland boat song.

Harmonia String Quartet

In 2004, Tony Lee brought together a group of enthusiastic string players to read orchestral music in his home. This became a frequent event at the Lee residence, and soon, the group decided to perform concerts publicly. Continuing under the name Harmonia String Ensemble and led by Nick Urquhart, the group now plays full seasons of diverse and eclectic music, raising funds for various charities with their concerts.

Many Harmonia members enjoy chamber music and perform in smaller groups from time to time. This program features four regular Harmonia members who are pleased to explore and share Taiwanese and Portuguese cultures from the perspective of a string quartet.
