Okinawa, formerly known as the Ryukyu Kingdom until 1879, flourished as a center of trade and cultural exchange throughout Southeast Asia. The Okinawa archipelago, consisting of approximately 600 islands, is home to diverse regional dialects, languages, and cultural expressions.
Vancouver Okinawa Taiko explores the expression of the island languages, Ryukyuan poetry, creative coinages and sign language through Eisa drum-dancing and Ryukyuan dance. Sharing the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of Okinawa.
Vancouver Okinawa Taiko, founded in 2004, has been performing in numerous community festivals, charity functions and anniversary events for just over two decades. The group's aim is to promote and preserve Okinawan style drum-dancing Eisa, and to share Okinawan cultural heritage. The membership consists of a mixed generation to reflect the presentation of grassroots folk art. We hope to deliver the Okinawan spirit through the beat of our drums and harmonies of our dance.
