SaySiyat - Saisiyat Tribe

SaySiyat
Saisiyat Tribe

An Indigenous group in Taiwan whose traditional communities are located at elevations ranging from approximately 500 to 1500 meters above sea level. With a population of around 7,000, they are one of the Indigenous groups in Taiwan facing the most significant cultural threats. Their most notable traditional cultural activities include the PaSta’ay (Dwarf Spirit Festival), KakawaS (Sky Prayer Festival), and PaSbaki’ (Clan Ancestor Festival).

The Saisiyat are a traditional patriarchal society, organized into clans based on shared surnames. Their clan names are derived from natural phenomena such as animals, plants, celestial bodies, or physiological phenomena. Major tribal decisions are made collectively by the elders, with each elder managing the affairs of their own clan. This also implies that these clans evolved from a single ancient tribe. Hunting was a major tradition in Saisiyat society, carried out by men according to agricultural needs, seasons, and social events such as marriages and funerals. Ancestors are believed to have come to understand the mountains while seeking game, thereby appreciating the true significance of the forests and mountains.

PaSta’ay
Dwarf Spirit Festival

PaSta’ay is held in accordance with an agreement with the Dwarf Tribe (ta’ay). The festival involves singing ritual songs taught by the Dwarfs; failure to perform the festival is believed to result in poor crop yields. The ritual process includes summoning the spirits, entertaining the spirits, admonishing the spirits, sending off the spirits by the river, and communal drinking to show appreciation. The festival takes place around the full moon after the harvest, typically around the 15th day of the 10th month of the lunar calendar. Before Japanese rule, it was held annually. Due to Japanese restrictions on frequent large gatherings, it was later changed to every two years, with a major festival held every ten years.
