About the Program

What do you think best represents your culture? Tartan. Poutine. Bubble tea. Behind every cultural symbol, someone made a choice.

Scottish tartan was once seen as the cloth of rebels, then reinvented as a celebrated emblem of national pride. Something similar happened in Taiwan. A bold red floral fabric, an everyday item found in nearly every Taiwanese household, came to be recognized as a symbol of the Hakka people. How does a piece of everyday life become the mark of an entire culture?

Through three threads—textiles, food, and plants—the exhibition connects stories from Scotland, Canada, and Taiwan. We invite you to browse, compare, and consider how cultural identities are shaped by power, markets, and the communities themselves. Step in, and join us in taking a closer look at the symbols around us.
